Hi Karen

 Me

Welcome to the November edition of the Self Discovery newsletter.  In the last newsletter I focused on beliefs - I hope this article helped you to develop new positive beliefs for your future.

As the year draws to an end, I would like to spend a short time this month reviewing strengths and weaknesses. Wouldn't it be great if we always worked to our strengths and developed our weaknesses? This article will give you some ideas to help you to do this.

It has been a hectic and exciting year for me since I set up Self Discovery Coaching in November last year.  Watch out for more workshops and new workbooks in the coming few weeks.

Best wishes

Review your strengths and develop your weaknesses

Reviewing your strengths and weaknesses is a powerful technique that can be useful when you are seeking career change (or any other change in your life). Linked to a strong and powerful goal, it can enable you to take advantage of your skills, talents and abilities to take your career to the next level.

Strengths

Personal strengths form an innate part of who you are and your characteristics. Consider your strengths as you see them and talk to your colleagues and friends for a further source of support.

What skills and capabilities do you have?
In what areas do you excel?
What qualifications, accreditations or experience make you unique?
What would other people consider to be your strengths?
What qualities, values or beliefs make you stand out from others?

Weaknesses

Consider your personal weaknesses and how you may be seen by others. It is important to list any areas you feel may be holding you back.

What are the gaps in your capabilities and what skills do you need to develop?
In what areas could you improve?
What would other people consider to be your weaknesses?
What personal difficulties do you need to overcome to reach your goal?

Next step

Now you should have a list of your strengths and weaknesses.  Having an awareness of these can help you to understand yourself and support the decisions you make.

It gives you a foundation from which you can move forwards goals or targets and support future changes in your life. There are various ways in which you can do this.

From a career development point of view, you can review your strengths, and ensure these are reflected on your curriculum vitae or letter to a prospective employer.

You can consider ways to address any weaknesses which you want to overcome or develop your skills and capabilities. For example, you may decide to get work experience in a particular area or increase your knowledge or qualifications.

This can be applied to any part of your life and also allow you to set targets to change the way you do things.  You can take clear steps towards achieving a successful life and career.
