Self Discovery Newsletter
Personal and professional
development
March 2008

Hi Karen
Welcome to the March edition of the Self Discovery
newsletter. Spring is around the corner so it is a great
time to declutter your life and focus on your future.
I have recently done that! I am now a firewalker, having
walked on hot coals at the amazing Tony Robbins' Unleash the
Power Within event at ExCel in London. Read more about my
experience on my blog at
http://www.selfdiscoverycoaching.blogspot.com.
This was my opportunity for personal development, but now it
is the time to focus on you Karen. So far this year, my
newsletter has considered how you can be happier at work,
and what you can offer an organisation. This month's
newsletter looks at how you can enhance your own personal
and professional development so you can make changes to your
future life and career.
Finally, please continue to share your insights and
experiences, I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes
Karen Williams

10 tips for personal and professional
development
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You
have heard about my experiences from the motivational event I
attended with Tony Robbins. I believe it is
important that you focus on your personal and professional
development, as it allows you to learn new skills and
enhance your life.
Personal and professional development can be defined by:
"The means by which a person maintains, improves and
broadens their knowledge and skills" OR
"Continually updating professional knowledge, personal
skills and competencies"
But learning doesn't have to be boring - what action
could you take today to improve your own development and
opportunities?
- Plan the training and learning you can do over the
next year to update your skills and expertise.
- If you are working, talk to your manager about
on-the-job training you could do, such as shadowing
another person or doing work experience in a different
department. If you work for yourself, what could you
learn from your peers or associates?
- Keep an eye out for new opportunities in your
organisation, your business or external jobs that would
enable you to grow in your chosen career.
- Regularly read a trade or special interest magazine to
keep you up to date with activities in your working area.
- Keep up to date with news events and consider how they
relate to your job or future dreams.
- Use the Internet for research or join forums and
groups to help you in your quest for greater knowledge.
- Read books and journals to expand your learning and
areas of interest.
- Look out for seminars, courses or workshops that can
help you with your personal or professional development.
- Seek a mentor who can pass on the benefit of their
knowledge and support your development.
- Or get a coach who will empower you to seek new skills
and experiences.
In this fast paced world, you are faced by challenges
every day in your personal and working life. So take action
today to set goals and develop your plan for 2008.
